Portland Youth Writing Workshops
WRITING WORKSHOPS FOR YOUNG WRITERS IN PORTLAND AND THE OREGON WILDERNESS
SUMMER WRITING CAMP AT THE ATTIC
Back for year three, the Summer Writing Camp is a great way for teen writers to stay engaged with the writing process during the summer. For writers ages 13-17, the camp provides a unique, supportive and cooperative learning environment where they can write, create and share their work with confidence.
Students in this open-ended workshop will meet eight times to work on personal narrative, fantasy, fiction, essays, poetry, and any other type of writing they wish. Writers will be heavily engaged in peer critiques, feedback, and revision.
The camp’s overall goal is to help keep teens and pre-teens engaged with the writing process so they are better prepared to utilize their creative skills through junior high, high school and beyond.
DATES and TIMES: Tuesdays and Thursdays, July 23 — August 15, 10 a.m. — 1 p.m.
WHERE: The Attic Institute, 4232 SE Hawthorne Blvd., Portland, OR 97215
COST: $250 for the entire eight sessions. A 10% discount is available for parents/families enrolling more than one student. Limited to 12 students total.
To enroll, and for more information: Send a note via the Inquire page. You can also download a registration form here.
Please include your name, email address, and the name/age of your child, and select “workshops” from the drop down menu.

WRITING FROM THE WILDS @ OPAL CREEK
Writing from the Wilds will give young writers an opportunity to renew their creative energy during mid-summer as they explore craft, narrative voice, story structure and more while roaming freely through the mind’s wild terrain. This three-day writing camp takes place in the beautiful Opal Creek Wilderness, and is in collaboration with the Opal Creek Ancient Forest Center.
Working with generative prompts and launching places, the workshop will inspire and support writers of all styles, levels and experience, no matter where they are in their writing lives. Each day includes separate sessions for adult and young writers, accommodating the needs of both groups, and making this unique opportunity perfect for parents and children seeking time and open space in which to write.
Students will also receive science instruction from Opal Creek’s educators and come to understand and appreciate their environment.
DATES and TIMES: Wednesday – Friday, July 17 – 19.
WHERE: Opal Creek Wilderness
COST: $175 includes workshop fees, food and lodging. Students should bring their choice of writing instrument for the three days.
TO REGISTER: Register online via the Opal Creek Ancient Forest Center

INDIVIDUAL CONSULTATIONS AND PRIVATE WORKSHOPS FOR YOUNG WRITERS
Individual and private group writing workshops are available year-round, and are designed to work with family budgets, schedules, and the individual needs of young writers. Since 2006, I’ve had the pleasure of working with writers from kindergarten through senior high. Some of my current writers are working on novels-in-progress, while others (and their parents) are looking for enrichment courses and opportunities beyond what’s available during the school day.
If you’d like to know more about my process and the goals I bring into a youth writing workshop, feel free to send via the Inquire page. You may also visit the blog page to read my “Youth Workshop Statement.”
Costs, schedules, and meeting places vary, and I’m always happy to work with parents in order to create the plan that will best support your goals and your child’s wishes around writing.
